EXTENDED DISTRIBUTION
Expanded Distribution is when you as an author agrees with a PUBLISHING HOUSE like Amazon, Barnes and Ingram Spark Group (self-published) platforms, among others who sell your books for a commission. They provide you with the access to sell your eBook, paperback, hardback and audiobooks in other bookstores. Unfortunately, those same platforms have further agreement in place with affiliated companies, this is part of their internal process and sometimes unknown to you the author. Even when the agreement has been severed with the Publishing House, those affiliated still gets to sell your books and you as the author does not get any commission. Later, when you do get to find out, the affiliated company is selling your book on their website, but they never even consult with you, and the Publishing House does not tell you how many books any of those bookstores have acquired. This is the point, there is nothing you can do about it. Because with some, when you agree to the SELF-PUBLISHED arrangements, you automatically allowed their affiliated companies to gain expanded distribution rights. It is very imperative that authors thoroughly check any agreements they get involved with, and not just look at the access to get your books published. The only advantage this presents for authors is getting more awareness and exposure on those platforms that the author extends their reach, the more opportunities available to be promoted and advertised on those platforms’ businesses website. Some may provide you with the option to choose and agree to go for expanded distribution, and it would be best at this point to know who they intend to give affiliated rights to inquire about your book (s). DIY IN PUBLISHING An author who is very new to being a writer, who is filled with excitement, anticipation and anxiety to be a self-published author, should be and must be very proud to get to that milestone in their writing journey. But then, it began to dawn on you that, you really don’t know anything much about getting published. Some of us are very technologically savvy, whilst others find it hard to navigate around the computer to get anything creative done. You must pay to create your book cover. You must pay someone to format the book-cover for you to fit into their specification. You must pay to have the ISBN, (which is the International Standard Book Number) to put on the back of your book cover. For audio and e-books some will give you a free ISBN but not all. SELF-PUBLISHED AUTHORS I became a self-published author in 2021. This is after having conducted anextensive amount of research in trying to find out where and who to send mymanuscript. I was saddened at the time by the lack of publishing houses, which didnot take unsolicited manuscript. What does that even mean right? You couldn’t just send your manuscript to them first without having an editor, or aliterary agent, who is known by the publisher. Well, how were authors likely to makeany money having to give so many pieces of the pie away, before they could evenget a slice for their own writing. As a self-published author, who have had to use several different platforms to try andsell my books, I was naïve in thinking that I was the master of my own game. Afterall, they provide the platform and let you and me loose to get on with it, for most parts. They have control over the other! Like, I knew all there was to know about how Iwould market and publish my books. I was very disappointed, saddened and in totaldisbelieve, to find that some of these bookshops wanted from 35% – 55% incommission. But as it said exactly on the tin!I had to do the work, uploading the manuscript and images of my book cover, and Ihave to pay always to get the images adjusted and reformatted to allow for theirprogrames to accept, so that I can submit my book, and that caused extrafrustrating, time-consuming and inconvenient they just sat back and wait until I startdoing the self-marketing and self-promoting of the sale of my book. This is presented as a major issue for all self-published authors not just some.Whilst on the other hand, you may think that this is a blessing because the traditionalpublishers are ONLY offering authors 15% – 26% in royalties.
